4 Paws For Ability: We love when traditional puppy raisers bring 4 Paws into their home for their whole family! Kristin Slusser shares how her family got into puppy raising!
“My husband and I first discovered 4 Paws through my work, once we learned more about the organization and what they do we knew we had to be involved some way. With us being animal lovers, plus my husband working with children who have autism, we knew being puppy raisers would be a perfect fit.”

Our puppy raisers witness 4 Paws magic everyday! Puppy raiser Lydia Pack shares her experience with 4 Paws magic!

“I remember hearing the words “4 Paws Magic” for the first time and shrugged it off. Sure, the organization does some great work, and yeah, dogs are pretty awesome, but to use the word “magic” is a bit of a stretch. After a year of volunteering as a sitter and foster, I blab all the time about the magic. Fostering has taken me far out of my comfort zone in the best ways possible, and best of all, given me a best friend and lifelong memories. Even if you don’t believe in magic, you’ll understand if you become even slightly involved with this organization. I truly hope to volunteer for years to come.”

Our puppies love to make you smile! Puppy raiser Angie Estep shares why she puppy raises!

“Puppy raising has truly made a HUGE impact on my life! It has not only taught me time management and patience but it has also shown me that the best thing in life is seeing someone smile. Whether it’s the kid getting their life changing dog or just someone you run into on the street, their smile is the most rewarding thing you can get out of 4 Paws. That’s why I puppy raise, to help enhance someone else’s life. Knowing that my dog could make someones life so much easier or even just make them smile a little more, really warms my heart.”

We love our puppy raisers! Caitlin Carruth tells why she loves making a difference by puppy raising!

“I’ve been puppy raising for almost 2 months now and have been an Onsite Volunteer for 6 months. I am currently fostering Jersey Boy from the tomato litter. I love puppy raising for so many reasons. First, in just a short time I’ve been able to meet so many new people. They have all been so helpful. I also love puppy raising because I have cousins that are autistic, epileptic, and diabetic. I have seen firsthand the effects that these diseases have on those afflicted with them and their families. Whenever puppy raising gets tough, to put things in perspective, I like to think about how small my challenges are compared to those of the families receiving dogs from 4 Paws. I love being able to play a role in making a difference for these people. I recently went to my first graduation and it’s something I’ll never forget. I’m so grateful to be involved in such a life changing organization!”

We love hearing how our puppy raisers got started! Ricky Hesse shares his story!

“I got into puppy raising by complete chance when I ran into a friend at a dining hall on campus. She was a sitter already and a couple other puppy raisers joined us and I asked all of them so many questions about 4 Paws. After I met Blanket (La La Loopsy litter) I immediately started filling out the application! I started as a sitter but quickly became a primary when the dog I co-handled for, Bayleef (Gen 2 Pokémon litter), needed a new foster. 4 Paws has given me so many opportunities to meet some incredible people. One of the most unique things I’ve experienced is being able to connect with people from other colleges, some of whom I talk to almost everyday. Through these dogs everyone becomes part of a family that continually grows and I can’t imagine my life without it!”

Our puppy rasiers go way back! And some of them come from our staff! Puppy raiser Courtney Preston started as a 4 Paws staff member and is now a puppy raiser!

“I used to work at 4 Paws as kennel staff and when I left 4 Paws I knew that I wanted to stay involved somehow so I started fostering. My first foster was Sweetheart from the Valentine Litter and I currently have Julio from the Tequila Day Litter. I love fostering and each of them will leave a special mark on my heart. They have made me a better person and I’m forever thankful for what 4 Paws does!”

Our university puppy raiser program has grown so much! We love hearing the stories of how each university chapter started! Puppy raiser Hayley Nagelberg shares her experience from the University of Illinois!

“As an animal sciences student at the University of Illinois, I received an email that a fellow student was hoping to start a chapter of 4 Paws for Ability on campus and was looking for students to help her start up the club with her. I instantly connected with the mission of 4 Paws and how much the organization aligned with my career goals. After a semester getting the club started, and another year on the executive board, I decided to apply to be a foster for my senior year. Puppy raising Santina (Cherry Pie Litter) was definitely one of the most rewarding experiences I had as a student. Santina not only became my constant companion through every class, meeting, meal and shift of work, but was the catalyst for so many more amazing moments. I got to educate so many students and faculty on what service animals are and how to interact around them, I became increasingly aware of accessibility matters everywhere I went, became more responsible with my time and energy, and was almost never found without a smile on my face. Seeing Santina learn a new command, succeed in an environment that once caused issues, have a full day of great behavior, or just cuddle up next to me at the end of a long day are memories I will always cherish. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to teach her as much as I could, and to have learned from her each and every day.”
