Hi My name is Sophie, I am 6 years old and I need you help to make my life easier and happier. I would like to share my story with you and the battle I fight with every day. I was born with some very scary and complicated problems and have had to fight every day to live since I was born. When I was born my mommy knew something as wrong, but the doctors were not willing to listen until I had my first seizure at 5.5 weeks. My mom wouldn’t give up on trying to find out what was wrong with me because I was unable to eat and would scream in pain, and there was nothing she did that made it better.
Right at 6 weeks, on my big sister’s birthday I was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome which is a genetic deletion of the 15th chromosome. This was the day that my mom found out my world would be a little more of a challenge and I would require life long care. I am unable to speak, walk, dress myself or help with any of my daily needs. My syndrome causes seizures, developmental delays. I also have other medical complications including: Scoliosis, hip dysplasia, irretractable epilepsy, optic disc anomaly, tube feeding dependence and sensorineural hearing loss in both ears. My body fights daily to keep me breathing during my seizures. I have been hospitalized over 700 times in my life from a seizure or other complication.
I had a fur best friend, her name was Tinkerbell. I met Tinkerbell in September of 2013 and we became instant best friends. She was so soft and loved to snuggle with me. Tinkerbell also had a very important job of letting mom know when that scary seizure monster was going to come. She would alert to keep me safe. We went every where together. One night mom put us to bed and Tinkerbell never woke up in the morning with me. Mom said she had an aggressive cancer that caused her aortic valve to rupture. I am not sure what this means, but all I know is I really miss her. The nights are long and I am scared when the seizure monster comes to visit, mom tries to help but she doesn’t have the magical touch like Tinkerbell did. If you can help mom help me get another fur friend, my life would be amazing!
From birth through training, the cost of placing such a dog in a family like ours is at least $40,000.
