Our daughter, Kendall, is a 3.5-year-old girl from Florence, NJ with Autism. She has many challenges and limitations in her daily life which make things harder for her, and us, her family. She wanders and runs away and while it’s common for kids with ASD, it is terrifying and nerve wracking for us. Because of this (and many other things) we’ve decided to apply for an Autism Assistance Dog for Kendall through 4 Paws for Ability – and we’ve been approved!
Kendall will be able to be tethered to her service dog while we’re in public, allowing her to be more independent without our pressing concern for her wandering or running away. Kendall’s service dog will not only be trained to track her, but also trained to help her during meltdowns, which are a daily occurrence in our lives. She is not able to express her emotions when she is upset or confused about something and it is exhausting and trying for everyone involved. Her service dog will help with reducing behaviors by directing her to something else, which is something we struggle with on a daily basis.
Our Kendall has a spunky personality and we know she will grow up to do BIG things. Her service dog will be another puzzle piece in getting her there!
The hardest part is raising the funds needed to train our service dog specifically for Kendall’s needs. We know with the help of our community (near and far) we can make it happen! It will take more than $40,000 to train Kendall’s service dog to her exact needs and we need to raise $17,000 of that.
