4 Paws for Ability for Kayla Gergich
We are the Gergich family! We live in Jonesborough, TN with our 2 beautiful daughters Kayla and Kallie. In May of 2009, after years of developmental delays, our oldest daughter Kayla suffered her first seizure at only 4 years old. Within a week we received her life changing diagnosis, a genetic birth defect known as Band Heterotopia with DCX gene mutation.
Over the past 9 years her seizures unfortunately have increased in frequency. Kayla has tried many combinations of anti epileptic drugs and has been able to obtain minimal control of her frequent seizures. In 2013, Kayla had surgery to implant a VNS (Vagus Nerve Stimulator) which sends electrical impulses to the brain in attempts to stop or prevent her seizures. Although this device works on a certain type of seizure for Kayla, she still has an average of 3-5 seizures per day. Earlier this year Kayla had a 4 day hospital stay after experiencing over 200 seizures in one night. Kayla is unable to walk for long periods of time and is sensitive to extreme heat. She relies on a medical stroller when getting out and about in town.
Having a child with severe epilepsy makes it hard to do simple things that many families with young kids take for granted. Kayla is currently unable to go outside and play, to play in her room, or go to the bathroom independently for fear of her having a seizure. She has also begun to have anxiety from experiencing seizures in front of peers and experiencing seizures in public places. When Kayla is able to receive her service dog he or she will become an instant member of our family. Her dog will work day and night alerting us to her seizures and also act as a service dog in all aspects of her daily life. We pray that her dog will become her best 4 legged friend and provide comfort and guidance to her not only at home, but at school, and anywhere our daily lives take us.
Our family has put much thought, time, and prayer into getting a service dog for Kayla. We have chosen 4 Paws for Ability to unite us with her dog. 4 Paws is one of the only agencies that place dogs with children. The process can be long, but we are committed to helping our daughter live the best life possible! It costs 4 Paws anywhere from $40,000 to $60,000 to raise and train a dog. Our contribution is only $17,000, a fraction of the total cost! Money donated through this page goes directly to 4 Paws for Ability in Kayla’s name!
Kayla loves cheerleading, bowling, swimming, going to the beach, playing Xbox, playing her iPad, and most of all is a karaoke queen! She has endured so much over the past 9 years, but her smile can brighten a room! Her attitude towards life and perseverance amaze us daily. With all the struggles and challenges that she faces daily in life, we cannot wait to see the positive impact her dog will have in her daily life!
Our family is so thankful to you for sharing her story and your donations! We look forward to sharing our journey with you all!
