Athena Kiger is seven years old and 4 feet 4 inches who has Asperger’s, which is on the Autism Spectrum. Even though her disability allows her to be higher-functioning, she still suffers with daily issues.
Athena will disappear in the store as if she were Houdini, for she is very curious and tends to wander. She has emotional breakdowns at random, and in these times she needs support. Loud noises tend to frighten her or become too much where she does not know what to do. Athena tends to be non-social but will engage in conversation if you speak to her first. She has trouble speaking and mispronouncing words.
A service dog for Athena would be a life-changing event; it would be trained to locate and find her and be able to calm her to where she could feel safe from emotional breakdowns. From birth through training, the cost of placing such a dog in a family like ours is at least $40,000. The fee to receive a service dog is $17,000.
