Our son Nick, 10 years old, came into our lives at 21 one days old after a difficult start in life. In addition to being exposed to drugs and alcohol in utero he was in three other placements before joining us in his forever home. As a result of the early trauma he suffered Nick has been diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD). A few of the challenges that Nick faces with FASD is cognitive delays, severe impulsivity, anxiety, depression and sleep issues. In order to help Nick deal with these challenges and improve his quality of life, we are in the process of getting a service dog from 4 Paws for Ability.
Life with a service dog will give Nick the opportunity to experience a whole new world. His dog will be trained to meet Nick’s specific needs. One of the most important tasks his dog will be trained to do is track Nick in the event that he wanders off. This service will increase Nick’s safety and help to prevent him getting lost and increase his independence. Nick will now be able to go into new situations with the comfort of a buddy, relieving some of the anxiety he experiences on those occasions. Being able to take on new situations with his service dog will give Nick a sense of self confidence that will be invaluable as he grows. The reassurance of a constant companion will help alleviate some of the symptoms associated with depression. He will have a continual presence with him while sleeping, allowing him to sleep in his room alone, all night long.
Due to the cost involved in training a service dog our family will be raising $15,000.00, to be contributed directly to 4 Paws for Ability. We are asking family, friends and our community to help us raise the required funds for 4 Paws for Ability through fundraising events and direct donations in Nick’s name. We would be happy to meet with you to discuss how you can help us reach our goal.
