Josh is an adorable, energetic 4 year old boy living with autism. He loves to play with bubbles, jump and play chase with his sister, Hayden. Josh attends preschool in an autism support classroom. He also receives Occupational therapy, Speech therapy and in-home behavior services.
Josh struggles to communicate his wants and needs and does not respond consistently to commands. Not being able to communicate leads Josh to become frustrated, which he shows by acting out aggressively including hitting, kicking and throwing tantrums. In addition, he lacks safety awareness which makes it very difficult to go on outings as a family. Even a trip to the store is close to impossible or has to be done very quickly before Josh has a meltdown. Due to Josh’s communication and behavior challenges, we are currently working with 4 Paws for Ability in Xenia, OH to train a service dog to meet Josh’s needs.
The service dog will be trained to calm Josh when he demonstrates aggressive behaviors. Josh will also be tethered to the service dog during family outings and when Josh begins to wander or be unsafe the dog will be trained to stay and keep Josh in place. Finally, there have been many examples of service dogs helping children with autism to communicate and form close bonds.
