Meet Gabriel Conway! Gabe is an energetic 3 year old who has a smile that lights up any room. We adopted Gabe from birth and are so blessed to be his parents. When Gabe was born, he had bilateral club foot that required extensive casting and braces to correct. Fortunately, his feet are doing great and he is almost done with his braces. Unfortunately, a year after he was born, doctors discovered he has a heart defect known as mitral valve stenosis. Good news is he has great doctors and it can be corrected with surgery that he will eventually have to have. This little boy is a fierce fighter.
Approximately one year ago, Gabe was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder known as Kabuki Syndrome. This genetic mutation affects approximately 1 in 32,000 people worldwide and has led to developmental delays for Gabe. Recently, Gabe was also diagnosed with Autism and we had some friends suggest looking into an Autism service dog. We came across 4 Paws for Ability and have been accepted as a client. We are so thankful and excited for this opportunity to help Gabe grow and become the best he can be. Gabe’s eventual service dog will help him with behavior disruption to help with outbursts, self-injurious behavior, and social interaction. Furthermore, the dog will help Gabe grow to be more independent over time by easing transitions, helping keep him safe, and providing a faithful companion. Gabe loves dogs and will be overjoyed to have a companion by his side to help him.
The cost of a trained service dog ranges anywhere from $40,000 to $60,000 and 4 Paws for Ability asks their clients to provide $17,000. The benefit Gabe will receive from a service dog is truly priceless. While Gabe attends multiple forms of therapy throughout the week, this therapy will be there for him 24/7.
If you saw Gabe you wouldn’t know he had challenges most other 3 year olds do not have. He loves fire trucks, music, playing outside, gymnastics, going to church, and running in the rain. Gabe refuses to be bound by the challenges he has and we refuse to prevent him from reaching his full potential.
How can you help Gabe be the best he can be?
