Meet Fox. He’s a pretty cool kid. He’s the first to jump in a big puddle, and his favorite food is bacon. Fox also has autism, which makes his daily life a bit of a struggle. Fox does 30 hours of ABA therapy each week during which one of his lessons is teaching him the meaning of safety. But we’re still pretty far from being able to breathe when his hand is not safely attached to ours.
That’s where an autism assistance dog comes in. We want Fox to have the same freedoms typical 4-year-olds have. We want him to be able to walk around the neighborhood without worrying he will wrench his arm away and run directly into the street. We want to sit with him at his favorite sushi place without being restrained. We want him to learn what it means to have a safe, fun time while out in the community.
We researched several programs for assistance dogs, and 4 Paws for Ability fits our needs the best. For us, one of the most important traits of any service provider is a clear vision and an ethical commitment to living out that vision. 4 Paws for Ability is consistently highly rated on Charity Navigator, and their success rate for placing a dog with someone in need is 98%. 4 Paws places assistance dogs with children when they’re younger and typically has a smaller window between initiating a contract and welcoming a dog into the home. 4 Paws spends about $40,000. In order to keep the waitlist short, 4 Paws asks clients to pay for just under half that amount.
And that’s where you come in. Fox’s service dog placement gets started as soon as we have raised $17,000. We’re asking for your help with that. The pervasive nature of autism requires multiple daily services for Fox that all cost money. We believe an autism assistance dog will improve his quality of life and be a huge step forward toward our goal of having Fox’s experience approximate that of a typical child his age. Please consider helping us.
