Caden is our amazing 8-year-old son. On the surface Caden seems to be a typical 8-year-old boy, he plays with his sister he rides the bus and goes to school and loves animals, cars You-Tube videos and his family. However, at his 18-month checkup we had begun to realize Caden wasn’t using many words and was always on the go like he had a motor. It was suggested he enter the school system at age 2 and after about a year we were told Caden was Autistic. We had little idea what that meant. We slowly began to realize the challenges Caden was facing. He struggled with fine and gross motor skills and social skills. While he may not seem all that different from other kids it continues to push him behind his peers and as he grows the gap continues to grow. We have been trying to help Caden through occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and even ABA therapy.
So far, we have had good success with Caden and we are happy with the results. He is a bright, funny happy boy and he is mostly mainstream at school. But we still see many challenges ahead. Caden gets frustrated and has a hard time venting his feelings. He does not have the social awareness of a typical 8-year-old and as he approaches his most awkward years socially as a kid we feel it might lead to more social issues. We feel getting a service dog would open up the world even more for Caden and help draw him out of his Autism world and draw other people to him as well. The service dog would comfort him when he is upset no one else understands why. It can be his friend when no one else wants to-and with his love of animals we know there would be an instant bond.
It costs 4 Paws for Ability at least $40,000.00 to raise and train each service dog. Each family is asked to raise $17,000.00 to help offset the cost of training the dog. We need to fundraise the money, so that Caden can have a service dog and a best furry friend of his own. If you would like to help, donations should be made directly to 4 Paws for Ability. Please be sure to write Caden Nichols on the memo line of your check, to be sure it gets credited to his account. Checks can be sent to:
